Dear brothers & sisters in Christ,
We will meet again tomorrow via Zoom.  To join the service, please download Zoom on your computer or laptops, smart phones or tablets prior to the meeting (if not already downloaded).  At the time of the meeting you can sign in to Zoom
Helpful hints :
  • you will be muted when you join, if you are reading or leading prayers please un-mute yourself for the duration of your participation.
  • On the top right of your screen there is an option “speaker view” this will enlarge the speakers “box” and diminish the other ones.
  • We have been told to switch off the video unless we are the one speaking as this maintains some of the quality of the call and doesn’t use as much of the network and of course to systematically put of microphones on mute … => during the sermon, we should all switch our video off and mute.

Service of the Word

Lent 4, Sunday 22 March, 2020

Gathering

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Prayer of Preparation

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known , and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen

Confession

Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been,
help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy,
and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen

Absolution

Hymn:       533 The king of love my shepherd is

THE KING OF LOVE my Shepherd is,

Whose goodness faileth never;

I nothing lack if I am His

And He is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow

My ransomed soul He leadeth,

And where the verdant pastures grow

With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,

But yet in love He sought me,

And on His shoulder gently laid,

And home rejoicing brought me.

!n death’s dark vale I fear no ill

With Thee, dear Lord, beside me;

Thy rod and staff my comfort still,

Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight;

Thy unction grace bestoweth:

And O what transport of delight

From Thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days

Thy goodness faileth never;

Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise

Within Thy house forever.

The Collect for the fourth Sunday in Lent.

Lord God, whose blessed Son our Saviour gave his back to the smiters and did not hide his face from shame: give us grace to endure the sufferings of this present time with sure confidence in the glory that shall be revealed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Reading: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

Sermon

Creed

We believe in God the Father,
from whom all things in heaven and earth have their being.

We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith and fills us with his love.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
who strengthens us with power from on high.
We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Intercessions

Merciful Father, accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

Blessing

Hymn:   150 Hail to the Lord’s Anointed

HAIL TO THE LORD’S ANOINTED,

Great David’s greater Son!

Hail, in the time appointed,

His reign on earth begun!

He comes to break oppression,

To set the captive free,

To take away transgression,

And rule in equity.

He comes, with succour speedy,

To those who suffer wrong;

To help the poor and needy,

And bid the weak be strong;

To give them songs for sighing,

Their darkness turn to light,

Whose souls, condemned and dying,

Were precious in His sight.

He shall come down like showers

Upon the fruitful earth;

Love, joy and hope, like flowers,

Spring in His path to birth;

Before Him, on the mountains,

Shall peace, the herald, go;

And righteousness, in fountains,

From hill to valley flow.

O’er every foe victorious,

He on His throne shall rest;

From age to age more glorious,

All-blessing and all-blessed.

The tide of time shall never

His covenant remove;

His name shall stand forever,

His changeless name of Love.

Dismissal:

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.

1 Samuel 16:1-13 New International Version (NIV)

Samuel Anoints David

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”

4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”

5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
